In any case, when i tried connecting it to another computer i still got no reaction from the drive and at that time a colleague told me about Apple’s Replacement Program for SSD’s found in the MacBook Air models sold between June 2012 and June 2013. Be advised as you will need different adapters for different Macbook models and when searching be sure to enter the model and the year it came out in order to better find the product you are searching for. You can usually buy one from Ebay for around 100 crowns. In order to access it on another computer you are going to need a special SSD adapter, as the disk is not compatible with the MSATA and M.2 readers.ĭepending on how often you are going to encounter Macs it could be worth to buy some adapters. In order to remove the disk, just remove the screw holding it, and carefully pull it right(if you are looking at the computer from the same angle i took the picture) to remove it from the motherboard. Once you remove the bottom, you are going to be able to see the motherboard, battery, cooler and the disk drive, marked by the red square in the next picture. It may look stupid, but when working on something the first time, it is much easier to arrange them in a corresponding pattern with their place on the bottom plate. When working on older Apple laptops, be as careful as you can with the screws, as i had myself a lot of problems with the screws quality.
Make sure that you are using the right screwdriver as you do not want to damage the screws holding the plate. In order to do that you have to remove the pentalobe screws holding the bottom plate. This could mean a faulty disk drive or a damaged hard drive flex cable, and seeing this i decided to open the computer and see if i manage to connect the disk to another computer and check the disk. In case you do not already know, this indicates that the computer does not see the hard drive or any media from which it could boot. I came across this error as a client left a MacBook Air that instead of starting the operating system was showing a folder icon with a question mark in the middle as seen in the picture below. Yesterday i encountered this problem for the first time, and i was unaware of the Replacement Program’s existence.
I know it’s a little late for this, but as i started working with Apple devices just two years ago i have a lot of catching up to do.
